History of JSSF

Rits Super Science Fair

In November 2003 we held our first ever Rits Super Science Fair (RSSF) with the kind participation of just one overseas school and 8 of their students.

In 2005, RSSF became a major event at Ritsumeikan High School, marking the school's 100th anniversary.

By 2008 and the 6th RSSF fair when we also hosted the 4th ISSF, we had, including 8 schools from Japan, gained the participation of as many as 40 schools from 17 different countries and regions thereby allowing our fair to assume its present form.

Japan Super Science Fair

In 2011, Ritsumeikan Senior High School recieved the Core Super Science High School (SSH) designation from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. At this point, the Rits Super Science Fair was held as the Japan Super Science Fair. Two years later, in 2013, the name was officially changed to the Japan Super Science Fair, which our fair has been known as since.

Online Japan Super Science Fairs

The 2020 and 2021 Japan Super Science Fairs were conducted as online projects. This enabled us to include far more schools than previously possible. The new technologies we utilized to accomplish this gave rise to online international collaborative research project partnerships that continue to endure.

Return to In-Person

In 2022, we returned to an entirely in-person format, welcoming participants from 25 overseas schools and 10 domestic schools back to Ritsumeikan High School. The following year we hosted participants from 31 overseas schools and 12 domestic schools representing 20 countries.

Looking Forward

It is our sincere hope to continue to maintain and grow the Japan Super Science Fair in order to increase the reach and become as inclusive as possible to further support our goals for participants and enable them to become beacons of light that will illuminate the future while contributing to science education around the world.
